One or more students are invited to work with Professor Welch on an on-going human rights issue, namely discrimination on the basis of descent. One of the most relevant examples comes from societies in which caste divisions are prominent - and India ranks at the top. The research will lead to eventual publication of a lengthy interdisciplinary article and to a chapter in a book.
NOTE: This can be available both spring 2015 and fall 2015.
Student Skill-Set Needed: Ability to work independently; familiarity with basical statistical skills and data manipulation; willingness to explore a variety of websources. Ability to read one or more major Indian languages is not necessary, but would be helpful.
