UB coursework paves way for successful career

I graduated from UB in May of 2009 with a special major titled ‘Animal Behavior’. During my undergraduate studies, I took a lot of animal behavior courses and conducted fieldwork in Costa Rica/Australia but wanted a research aspect to round out my education. My CURCA research was to see if environmental enrichment had an effect on mating choice in zebra finches.

Immediately following graduation I got a full time job at the Buffalo Zoo as the Animal Care Specialist in the Education Department and one-year later I was promoted to Animal Care Supervisor for the same department.

Approximately 7 months ago I went to work for the Aquarium of Niagara. I am an aquarist and take care of all the fish (including sharks), reptiles, amphibians and penguins. On February 9th I will be a hosting a new social that I created at the Aquarium called ‘Penguin Romance: Love on the Rocks’. In this new social adults will join me in learning about the threatened Peruvian penguin’s mating rituals, courtship displays and how similar penguin love is to our own. Original penguin art will be available for sale, created by our penguin couples. I am also a member, education committee member and contributor for the quarterly newsletter of IAATE (International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators).
