Karen Beljan, BS '05, Environmental Engineering
Beljan, of Eden, New York, evaluated remediation alternatives to improve the water quality of Onondaga Lake, ultimately helping to develop a method to aerate the lake that would improve the water and ecosystem.

My research is broadly concerned with the processes and patterns of morphological and genetic diversification in natural populations, particularly plant (adaptive) radiations. I focus on molecular phylogenetics and evolution at low taxonomic levels, primarily in flowering plants.
A research project with me would involve molecular phylogenetic research in a group of plants, to be determined in consultation.
Such work could entail field studies, sampling of DNA from herbarium specimens, molecular lab experience, and various bioinformatic analyses.
Date Open: Apr 29, 2009 to May 5, 2010
Suggested Skill Set: BIO 200 and 201 are prerequisites, and other molecular/cell biology, and bioinformatics (e.g., BIO 400) courses preferred. Molecular lab experience preferred.
