Karen Beljan, BS '05, Environmental Engineering
Beljan, of Eden, New York, evaluated remediation alternatives to improve the water quality of Onondaga Lake, ultimately helping to develop a method to aerate the lake that would improve the water and ecosystem.

Students have outfitted a motorized wheelchair with sensors, cameras, and computer-control, so that it may be guided by a therapist at a distance. The chair will be used to teach mobility and control to students who are just beginning to acquire the skills. The chair has a "puppy dog" mode, in which it will follow someone wearing a special vest, or will navigate along a line of tape placed on the floor. With all of the requisite security and safety measures, this gives a sense of true independence to a handicapped child who is just learning to ambulate and navigate.
Buffalo Wheelchair donated the motorized wheelchair, an $8000 value.
