Beljan, of Eden, New York, evaluated remediation alternatives to improve the water quality of Onondaga Lake, ultimately helping to develop a method to aerate the lake that would improve the water and ecosystem.

We study HIV entry mechanisms and design and test inhibitors that specifically halt the protein conformational changes that occur allowing HIV to enter and infect a host cell. We also use virus mechanisms such as membrane fusion to design novel nanoparticles to target a variety of diseases.

Suggested Skill Set: The student should have completed lecture and laboratory courses in the basic sciences (such as chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, etc.) including ‘hands on’ experience in bench science techniques. These positions are limited to students interested in basic science research who are sophomore level or beyond.
