Beljan, of Eden, New York, evaluated remediation alternatives to improve the water quality of Onondaga Lake, ultimately helping to develop a method to aerate the lake that would improve the water and ecosystem.

My lab focuses upon revealing the methods by which bacterial pathogens acquire essential nutrients from the infected host. A second focus of the lab is to evaluate the immunomodulatory properties of several bacterial proteins which can augment vaccine responses.

Suggested Skill Set: The student should have completed lecture and laboratory courses in the basic sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, etc.) in which the student obtained "hands on" experience in bench-science technologies. Only those students seriously interested in pursuing a career in biochemical research (i.e. attending graduate school), NOT in clinical medicine (i.e. applying for medical school), should apply.
